Story of Charlie Birger

Today I am touring the Franklin County Historic Jail with Bob Rea (president of the Franklin County Historic society), Where Charlie Birger would spend the last year of his life for the murder of Joe Adams before becoming the last public hanging in IL. Originally from Russia, he would emigrated to the US in 1887. He would be located to St. Louis where he would be a Newspaper boy in a "rough" neighborhood alley. He would run errands for gangsters and was fascinated by the wild wild west life style. He would join the 13th Calvary at age 21 in 1901 and was stationed in Wyoming. He had the reputations of breaking horses that couldn’t be broken. He was an expert marksman and a boxer. After being honorably discharged he would then move to back to Illinois to Madison County of a small town of Glenn Carbon where he would make his first killing of a man with the nick name of "chubby" Autner. After winning his court-case of self defense, he would move to saline County, IL where during the day he was an upstanding citizen and during the night he wore his bulletproof vest and committed crimes,. From paying off the cops, smuggling booze and killing anyone that stepped in his way, he would become southern Illinois's most notorious gangster. Check out all the details in the video!
