Little Mary Ellen Wilson was beaten, starved, and often locked in a closet, when concerned neighbors sought to help the barefoot child they saw out at night in the middle of winter, there were no laws to protect the child. The American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals represented her case, as there were more protections to protect animals from abuse than children. What does this say about our society? Why does our society at large advocate and support the prevention of animals more fervently than children?
